Introduction to Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Purview for ISVs

Independent Software Vendors who have proven most resilient during turbulent times have leveraged the power of data. Data is what enables both analytical power—analysing the past and gaining new insights, and predictive power—predicting the future and planning ahead.

Azure Purview is Microsoft’s new tool that helps ISVs map all their data, no matter where it resides, and provides an end-to-end view of their data estate. Azure Synapse Analytics meanwhile leverages on-demand or provisioned resources to ingest, prepare, manage, and serve data for business intelligence. Azure Synapse Analytics changes how ISVs can store data and gain insight by bringing together data warehousing, big data, data integration, and AI.

What is Azure Synapse?

Analytics must work at massive scale on any kind of data, whether raw, refined, or highly curated. This typically requires stitching together big data and data warehousing technologies into complex data pipelines that work across data in relational stores and data lakes. These kinds of solutions are difficult to build, maintain, and secure. Their complexity delays delivering the insight.

Azure Synapse brings together data integration, enterprise data warehousing, and big data analytics—at cloud scale. The unification of these workloads can enable ISVs to massively reduce their end-to-end development time and accelerate time to insight. It now also provides both no-code and code-first experiences for critical tasks such as data ingestion, preparation, and transformation.

Azure Synapse enables a level of productivity and collaboration among data professionals that previously wasn’t possible by deeply integrating Apache Spark and its new SQL engine.

Independent Software Vendors are organisations who develop, market and sell software that runs on third party software and hardware platforms.

What is Azure Purview?

Microsoft has recently announced the preview release of Azure Purview. Azure Purview is a unified data governance service that helps you manage and govern your on-premises, multi-cloud, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) data. Easily create a holistic, up-to-date map of your data landscape with automated data discovery, sensitive data classification, and end-to-end data lineage. Empower data consumers to find valuable, trustworthy data.

The Azure Purview preview is separate product that can be used with Azure Synapse Analytics. It is new data governance solution that’s integrated with the Microsoft Information Protection service. It relies on the same “sensitivity labels” approach of Microsoft Information Protection to classify ISV data.

Microsoft suggested that Azure Purview can help protect data handled by non-Microsoft products, as well:

Microsoft began working on Azure Purview after it introduced Azure Synapse Analytics last year. What is highly beneficial is that Azure Purview can work with other cloud-based and on-premises solutions, but it’s also integrated with the Microsoft 365 Compliance Center, various Azure services, the Power Platform and SQL Server.

A well-planned deployment of a data governance platform (such as Azure Purview), can give the following benefits:

  • Better data discovery.
  • Improved analytic collaboration.
  • Maximized return on investment.

Azure Purview enables organizations of all sizes to manage and govern their hybrid data estate. Your Azure Purview Data Map will enable you to establish the foundation for effective data governance. Purview makes it easy to register, and automatically scan and classify data at scale.

Azure Purview goes hand in hand with Azure Synapse Analytics. While Azure Purview allows ISVs to map their data, no matter where it is and provides a view of their data estate, Azure Synapse Analytics leverages sources to ingest, prepare, manage, and serve the data.
